ENG: Here our interview with the Norwegian multi instrumentalist, producer and ex-Motorpsycho’s drummer, Håkon Gebhardt, who has just released his new single That day:

Abbiamo ascoltato il tuo nuovo singolo, That day, ed è davvero interessante! Potresti parlarcene? Cosa dobbiamo aspettarci dal tuo nuovo lavoro?

ENG: Hi Håkon, nice to meet you and thanks for the interview. We have listened to your new single That day, and that’s very interesting! Could you talk about it? What can we expect from this work?

ITA: Ciao, e grazie per aver ascoltato That day.

ENG: Hello, and thanks for listening to That day. It’s the first new song released because it was the first written for the whole project. Escaping the Norwegian winter, sitting in Firenze, getting fingers wrecked, picking a twelve string monster, trying to find a pattern or melody, suddenly this primitive guitar riff revealed itself, pointing out the direction for where to go from there. This would be better on a electric guitar, and in fact it was!

It is in a new direction for me after years playing banjo, acoustic guitar in more folk based projects.

I got inspired to go electric, and solo again when I met Marì, my partner in life and in this project. At that time I was tired of singer songwriters and tired of recording acoustic music, I needed something new, something to be triggered by, so we started writing new music together, music that had to be amplified and distorted, music that was waiting to be written, music that was waiting to be played. Music based in a rock landscape, but twisted in a “Gebhardt way”!

ITA: Il tuo ultimo album solista risale a 16 anni fa.

ENG: Your last solo album dates back to 16 years ago. Why did you keep us waiting for such a long time? All joking aside, is there a particular reason for your comeback?

Sentirsi ispirati, sollevati, tornare a respirare, a sentirsi vivi.

ENG: I have been playing, composing, recording, touring, and producing many different projects and artists those years, so it has actually not been enough time to consider to do stuff alone. But I also felt a growing need to work on my own music, work on something that was me, and not another artist that I was producing. Because when I produce other artists or write and produce projects I play in myself, I always have to limit the ideas that are bouncing around in my head. I have to consider the image or wishes of the recording artist, I can’t just do what I want.

But to stay alive, I sometimes need to put everything away and just push record and play, fuck what’s wrong or right, I want to play like this to get this sound, and I want to mix like this to get something that is cool for me to hear, not for putting the radio’s formatters to work.

There are too many disturbing elements in the music industry. I had fun making music before I became professional, and I don’t want to lose that joy because of too much thinking. Music is intuition, and music is the particular reason for this “comeback”!

Marì: Yes, music is the reason of our project. If it’s something I personally wish for, is being able to deliver some joy to the people listening, as it’s always been for me through the years, trying to forget all the rest while listening to a song. To get inspired, to feel reliefed, to start breathing again, to feel alive.

And I’m deeply thankful to Håkon for giving me the possibility to express myself in freedom, to try to deliver what I have inside, my meanings and my thoughts throughout music. It’s a blessing for me. And very challenging too, cause for the first time I find myself experimenting with English lyrics, while my whole life I’ve been working with my own language, as an Italian copywriter. Håkon is giving me an amazing possibility of growth, everyday I’m learning something by him, improving and improving my bass playing and my awareness as a musician.

ENG: You have your own recording studio in Trondheim, Das Boot Studio. What does it mean for a musician to pass “on the other side of the mixer”? Could you suggest us some bands you produced?

The Northern Lies e Ida Jenshus invece per chi apprezza folk e “americana”.

ENG: I have always been interested in recording, and been playing around with recording machines since I got my first Tascam 4-track cassette recorder. I’ve always been on both sides of the mixer when I have been recording. That was probably one of the things that was making the early Motorpsycho albums so full of strange sounds and recordings, we could play around in the studios ourselves when the engineer was tired and had to go home, and often in the morning when the engeneir was back, we had recorded things at night that would not have happened between 10-18 daytime. The best ideas normally comes when you are too tired, too fucked up, the moment you are desperate and you don’t care if you have a guitar or a flugabone to play on, you just have something that has to go on tape, something you need to say.

Among the bands I produced I’d really like to suggest you Barren Womb, an amazing hard core duo. They also rehearse in Das Boot and I really have hopes for them to do good around Europe, that they already started touring. The first gig I saw with those two guys with drums and guitar on stage, blew everything out of my head. This was a band I needed to record, I wanted their sound and energy all over my studio. We did one album and a 7” so far, and we are going to start recording the next in march.

Then I can tip you about I love Wynona, more for those who like epic music, or Manifest for those that are into thrash metal. The Northern Lies and Ida Jenshus for those who like more folk, “americana”.

ENG: Norway has always produced a lot of good music. Could you express your view on the Norwegian underground scene in 2016?

ENG: I am not good at following the underground scene or even new music in general. I work with music the whole time in my studio or at home, so my head is filled up with my own stuff. But I defenetely recommend Barren Womb, they are simply the best!

ENG: It has been about 11 years since your departure from Motorpsycho. Considering your artistic experiences in these years, are you satisfied with the direction that your work has taken?

ENG: I had to leave Motorpsycho because there was too many things I wanted to do with music before I was dead. Motorpsycho took 150% of my time and I was a guitar player, and made a lot of music before I started drumming full time in the band. I had to do my own things and work with other kinds of music that was interesting me at the moment. I must say that I have been satisfied in all kind of ways when it comes to my musical experiences.

ENG: You also composed music for children! I bet that writing such a particular kind of music could be very funny. What are the differences between composing “usual” music and composing music for children?

ENG: Making music for kids is very natural for me. Of course you have to take it seriously, but it is fun to bring out the kid in yourself, and like I said that’s not difficult for me. But I wanted to give the kids music with meaning, try to put some good values in the lyrics, and not just Disney happy happy glossy kids music.

Music was important for me when I grew up, and there was a couple of artists performing for children that were shaping my musical interests. I wanted to try to be that missing link in todays children music universe!

gebhardtinstudioITA: Ultima domanda: prossimi passi? C’è speranza di vederti in Italia?

ENG: Last question: next steps? Is there any hope to see you soon in Italy?

ENG: Last summer we did our first shows together, just the two of us on stage, plus a crappy drum machine and some percussions on the floor for me to step on, and WOW! we really had a blast!

We did Bukta Festival in Tromsø, my home town, and Pstereo Festival in Trondheim to see how the new material was working, and if we could pull it off on stage.

That day was one of the new songs the audience responded to, and came asking where they could find it after the shows. This gave us the confidence to follow the path we were on, and try to get our music spread from the polar North to the warm South.

Our focus is now to find the time for arranging a show case and a few gigs for next spring in Italia, so please keep on following!

And, on top of that… I guess we will move to Italy in not too long. So, Yes, there is hope!
